About the Speaker Lu Jiangwei (盧 姜威) — also known as Ro Sift — holds a Doctorate in Arts (Okinawa Karate) from the Graduate School of the Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts. He also studied at the University of the Ryukyus and Okinawa University. Originally from Fuzhou, Fujian Province, China, he now resides in Naha, Okinawa.
“Although I am originally from Fujian, I came to Okinawa twelve years ago, following in the footsteps of the pioneers of the ‘Thirty-Six Families of Kume.’
After arriving, I was fortunate to encounter Karate and soon realized that it was not a product of mainland Japan, but a cultural treasure born in Okinawa—a crossroads of civilizations that absorbed diverse influences to create something the world can take pride in.
Since then, I have pursued Karate both theoretically and practically. Although no university or research institute was dedicated solely to its study, I was able to complete my doctoral dissertation thanks to the generous guidance of Professor Hateruma Nagayoshi.
Here at the graduate school, learners explore a wide range of research themes, encouraging and inspiring one another. Through this process, I came to appreciate the true joy of learning, and I remain deeply grateful for the support of my peers.”
